Irena Sendler Award for Making the World Better is a unique award granted since 2006 by the Center for Citizenship Education Foundation. Its objective is to appreciate teachers who promote such values as empathy, openness and respect in their educational activity, thus influencing young people’s competence and contributing to building a more tolerant society.
The award honors teachers all over Poland who work at kindergartens, elementary schools, high schools and educational care facilities. It is awarded for initiatives supporting understanding of diversity, dialogue, social activism, and acting for the common good. Highly appreciated are projects that develop empathy, social sensitivity and reflection on contemporary world challenges such as identity, disability, refugee problems, climate crisis or local history.
The award is addressed to teachers who create in their everyday work safe space for conversation on difficult subjects, support people who have experienced discrimination, engage local community and inspire young people to undertake socially responsible activities.
Submissions can be made individually or by another teacher by August 18. The winner of the main award in the amount of PLN 15,000 will be a person selected from about 10 finalists shortlisted by the Competition Chapter chaired by Krzysztof Czyżewski, the founder and president of the Borderland Foundation of Sejny.
The Partners of the Award are, among others, the Children of Holocaust Association, KPMG Foundation, and the Jewish Religious Community in Warsaw. The initiative has been supported for years by Polish-American Freedom Foundation as part of the Learning Schools program.
The honorary patrons of the initiative are the Ministry of National Education, the Polish Ombudsman and the Ombudsman for Children.
