High school-leavers coming from small towns or villages and low-income families may apply for a grant for the first year of a full-time university course under the national Bridge Scholarships Program. The amount of PLN 10,000 will support young people who apart from having good results in their school report also meet the remaining criteria of the program. Applications will be accepted from July 9 to August 20.
Starting from July 9, school leavers who are accepted by Polish public universities to a first year of full-time course, and come from small towns (with population of up to 20,000 residents) or villages, and from low-income families (per capita gross income of not more than PLN 2,969) may apply for the Bridge Scholarship provided that they also meet one of the following additional eligibility criteria of the program:
- they are finalists of a Thematic Olympiad in one of the high school subjects,
- they come from a big family, a foster family or a state children’s home,
- they have been recommended by a local NGO participating in the program.
The total amount of “bridge” scholarship for the first year of a university course is PLN 10,000, and it is paid in 10 monthly installments over the academic year. The program participants who are doing well in their first year can get other scholarships for subsequent years of studies, for foreign language studies, for studies or internships abroad, and they will qualify for competence developing workshops.

The Bridge Scholarships Program was initiated by Polish-American Freedom Foundation in 2002. Since then, it has been managed by the Educational Enterprise Foundation. It is one of the biggest non-governmental scholarship programs in Poland. To date, 27 500 various scholarships have been granted under that program, including over 18 000 for students of the first year of university course.
The author and strategic partner of the program is Polish-American Freedom Foundation. Currently, the other partners of the program are the Inter Cars Foundation, and a coalition of several dozen local NGOs. For implementation of 22 rounds of the program, the partners have disbursed a total of almost PLN 142.5 m.
The program is implemented in cooperation with Professor Bronisław Geremek’s Center, and the “Shipyard” Foundation.
