Olena Shynkarenko, Lane Kirkland scholarship holder in the 2012/13 academic year from Ukraine, was awarded in the Polish Patent Office competition for the student dissertation in the field of intellectual property, which was decided on November 18, 2013.
During her stay in Poland as a Lane Kirkland scholarship holder, Olena Shynkarenko studied at the Intellectual Property Law Institute at the Jagiellonian University, where she completed a post-gradual course. She wrote ‘The transformation of Polish system of copyright protection – lessons for Ukraine’ diploma thesis under the supervision of Sybilla Stanisławska-Kloc, Ph.D. Her thesis was submitted by her tutor to the 11th edition of a competition for postdoctoral, doctoral, diploma and student dissertations in the field of intellectual property, which was organized by the Polish Patent Office in 2013, and won the award of the Minister of Science and Higher Education. The Jury of the competition is composed of academics from the University of Warsaw, Jagiellonian University, The Polish Academy of Sciences and the Polish Patent Office President.
The awarded Kirkland Program alumna graduated from the Faculty of Legal Sciences at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” in Kyiv. Before she came to Poland, she had been working for a law firm offering legal services to international companies, supporting their operation in Ukraine, also in the field of intellectual property rights. At present, she is a post-graduate student at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. She has been a member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine since 2010, and the European Business Association with its seat in Kyiv since 2011.
The objective of the Lane Kirkland Scholarship Program is to share Polish experiences in transformation with representatives from Eastern European countries with two semester complementary studies at Polish universities. Today, the Program is addressed to candidates from Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, as well as Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan and Kirgizstan. Under individual study programs, Lane Kirkland scholarship holders study selected aspects of such fields as economics and management, public administration and business, law, social and political sciences. The Program’s founder and donor is the Polish-American Freedom Foundation and it’s Manager is the Education for Democracy Foundation.
