The “2020 Relief Fund for NGOs and Civic Initiatives” is a program of the Polish-American Freedom Foundation run in cooperation with the Education for Democracy Foundation. Its objective is to offer support to organizations which are facing very serious difficulties due to COVID-19 pandemic.
Since May 2020, the support has been granted to organizations involved in PAFF programs as well as those who didn’t cooperate with PAFF before but whose activities are compatible with the PAFF’s mission. Thanks to the grants they received, the organizations could adjust their activities to the current conditions and start new projects, often of the nature of intervention, addressed to people who are very much in need. Organizations received also institutional support that allows them to cover their administrative costs and pay remuneration to their employees.
So far the “Relief Fund” has granted a total of almost PLN 3 million to almost 100 NGOs. Grants went to15 organizations acting as PAFF Program Managers, 36 regional PAFF Partners (Act Locally Centers and organizations involved in the “Study Tours to Poland” Program) and 43 other organizations that applied under the competition opened in August 2020.
The objective of the new round of competition is to support civic initiatives aimed at mitigating or counteracting negative effects of COVID-19 pandemic on education and social development of children and young people in villages and small towns as well as those coming from environments at risk of social exclusion.
That objective results from the experiences of long-term PAFF partners, as well as organizations PAFF hasn’t cooperated before. The necessity to take up such activities is also confirmed by the results of surveys conducted over the last year by NGOs, private sector and academic circles which show the negative consequences of education carried out under conditions of deep social isolation. PAFW considers the current problems with teaching and educating children and young people to be very important and gives priority to activities aimed at improving the situation. As in the previous round of the competition, it is possible to award a grant for NGO’s institutional development and assistance in adjusting it to operate in the time of pandemic and after, by enhancing the organization’s human resources.
