It is with profound sadness that we learned about the passing of Professor Aleksander Koj, former Rector of Jagiellonian University, Professor at the Institute of Molecular Biology of Jagiellonian University, Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences and former Chairman of the Conference of Polish Rectors, author of numerous academic publications on life sciences, nuclear biology and biochemistry.
Since the inception of the Polish-American Freedom Foundation, Professor Aleksander Koj was a Member of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, and since 2010 a PAFF Director Emeritus. As an outstanding academic and educator he always served us with his vast knowledge and rich experience, thus immensely contributing to the implementation of PAFF’s mission of strengthening civil society, democracy and market economy in Poland, including individual and civic development, as well as sharing Polish experiences in transformation with other countries of Central and Eastern Europe.
We will miss him very much. He was a great man, an outstanding figure, a model of honesty and dedication, and an example of how to derive joy and satisfaction from scientific work as well as active citizenship.
We extend our sincerest condolences to his family.
